How to Take Care of a Drunk Person

How to Take Care of a Drunk Person

Every year in the US alone, a number of drunk students die or get in a car crash as a result of alcohol. Because people assume that passing out, vomiting, and being really drunk will be slept off, resulting in a simple hangover next morning.Unfortunately, thinking this could endanger an inebriated person's life.

When someone at a party near you gets so drunk that they can't take care of themselves, they're at risk of harming themselves, and if they've drunk too much altogether, they may even have alcohol poisoning and need immediate attention. Being able to spot alcohol poisoning in a drunk person could mean that you save his or her life; knowing what to do to take care of a drunk person is therefore an essential skill for all party-lovers.
Recognize someone who has had one too many. Signs that a person has drunk too much include slurred speech, inability to remain standing or sitting up straight, a marked desire to lie down or roll over, questionable walking technique, stumbling, unusual, loud, or embarrassing behavior, violent reactions, bloodshot eyes, feeling extreme temperature differences, etc.

The amount of care your drunk friend or acquaintance will need will depend on how much he or she has had to drink. Each individual's situation will need to be evaluated according to context and circumstances, but the main point is to be prepared to care for them until they're out of danger.

3 Step in to discourage further drinking. Try distracting the intoxicated person from having any more alcohol. Get them away from the alcohol  take them to the front yard for a breath of fresh air, suggest that it's time to call it a night and phone a taxi, or simply sit with them away from the drinking area and talk. Find somewhere quiet and not too bright.
If they want drinks, take responsibility for delivering drinks that won't harm them. Try water, or try very watered down versions of their drink. Often you can get away with giving someone who is very drunk soft drinks; simply hand them a coke and claim that it contains vodka. Chances are they won't even notice, especially if you're distracting them in other ways such as talking or watching TV together.

If someone tends to over drink, but has not yet drunk too much, suggest less-strong drinks such as beer, and drinks which may be less appealing to drink in quantity having less "drinkability" such as full-flavored bitter foreign beer, instead of mixed drinks and liquor. This can make the level of intoxication easier for the drinker and friends to monitor, and less likely to continue to increase after one has stopped drinking, but is not a substitute for eventually stopping drinking.

Avoid saying anything that could provoke or anger the intoxicated person. Remain calm and reassuring at all times.

Read How to keep your friend from driving drunk for information on stopping a determined drunk from driving.

Lack of coordination will make walking very difficult, so don't suggest this as a way of "sobering up".

If the intoxicated person needs to visit the bathroom, accompany them and wait in the bathroom. It's all too easy for an uncoordinated drunk person to slip and bang a head and get knocked out on the hard surfaces in bathrooms.

4Do your best to help the intoxicated person to avoid physical injury, especially through falling. Help the person to a safe seat or to the floor. If the intoxicated person begins to heave, try to help them to an appropriate place to vomit.
If a person is lying down when they begin to heave or vomit, place them in the recovery position on their side with the higher knee bent. This is to prevent choking. Put something behind their back to prevent them rolling back onto their back or stomach; vomiting in either position can cause them to choke or drown. If they are lying on a couch, ensure that they are facing AWAY from the back of the couch so that any vomit does not pool around the person's face especially on leather couches.

If the person has fallen down, or you find them on the floor and are unsure whether or not they fell down, you MUST take them to get medical attention. Head injuries can easily be incurred in falling down, and intoxication can hide the usual signs of concussion or more serious head injury.

Do not leave someone who is very drunk to fall asleep alone. Stay in the room with them  watch a film or TV, read a book, or clean up after the party but keep them in the room with you. If you take them home ensure a responsible person will do the same.
If you can't be with them, or you can't be sure someone else will keep an eye out for them, get on the phone to someone you know who will care enough to do this, such as a parent, guardian, sibling, or friend. Explain that it is urgent and that you have seen how wasted they are. At the very least, keep watch over the drunk person until the changeover of responsibility.

Check regularly to ensure the intoxicated person responds to being stirred. Say their name loudly, ask them firmly to open their eyes, prod them and look for a response. Watch the chest or abdomen for breathing movements. A rate of 12- 20 breaths per minute is normal.
Look for signs of alcohol poisoning. If breathing becomes slow (8 breaths per minute or less or irregular with 10 seconds or more between each breath), and they are unresponsive to being prodded and pinched firmly, this suggests alcohol poisoning. Other possible signs include
Passed out or stupors unconscious or semi-conscious, cannot be awakened

Blue lips and fingertips

Dehydrated

Rapid pulse

Vomiting while asleep and not waking up even when vomiting

Cold clammy hands/ feet.

If you spot these signs, call 911/112/110 emergency services, or your area's emergency number immediately. If you're on campus, call the campus security or university police. Explain the situation clearly.
You will not get into trouble for calling for help. Authorities prefer to keep people alive than to scold for irresponsible behavior. Drinking age laws and campus policies are in place to stop life being endangered, not to cause people to abandon one another during a medical emergency. Treat this like it is  a medical emergency, not an offense.

Stay with the intoxicated person until help arrives. Keep them warm and continue to monitor breathing. If a qualified first aider is available, call on them for help while waiting for the ambulance
Don't panic. Stay calm. Although you're likely to be upset and afraid, it won't help the patient if you transfer this fear and anxiety to them. Reassure them, and in doing so, reassure yourself.

If the person is awake or conscious, do not touch or prod them without explaining what you're about to do; they may react violently.

Don't give them stimulating drinks such as tea or coffee. These can cause further dehydration; keep in mind that drinks don't change the state of drunkenness, only the passing of time will sober up the drunk person.

If someone else is present, send them to direct the ambulance paramedics to your position.

Do not jeopardize your own health when looking after the person. Do not try to physically lift a drunken person or stop someone much larger than you falling down–you may injure your back. Instead, concentrate on protecting their head.
If someone gets into a drunken state having taken in seemingly little alcohol, they may be lightweight but be wary of drinks being spiked or an interaction with over-the-counter, prescribed, or illicit drugs as well. Using high-energy drinks in combination with alcohol hides the usual signs of intoxication so that blood alcohol levels can become dangerously high. If you suspect this, get the person home and report it to health authorities, or take them straight to the emergency department.
Telling the person the danger they put themselves in may stop them from over-indulging again. Wait until they're sober and have a heart-to-heart with them about their behavior. You can make it less confrontational by saying something like: "I didn't much like the friends you brought along the other night Susie." Susie will reply: "What friends?" And you can reply: "Making fun of friends Susie. And I'm bored Susie. And undressing Susie. And rolling on the ground Susie." It may seem odd but making the drunk person's behavior sound like a third person can help them better identify with the types of behaviors other people witnessed.
If the person you suspect to be suffering from alcohol poisoning is underagedo not put off calling the emergency services for fear of getting them in trouble. The younger a person is, the more susceptible to alcohol they are, and the longer you leave them, the worse they could get.

Renewable Energy Review India

Renewable Energy Review India

Developers, manufacturers, investors and other renewable energy industry stakeholders need to know where the next big market is going to be so that they can adjust their business decisions accordingly.
Since 2003, global consultancy Ernst & Young has released its Country Attractiveness Indices, which gives a numerical ranking to 30 global renewable energy markets by scoring renewable energy investment strategies and resource availability. The indices are updated on a quarterly basis and the most recent report can be found here. Here is the firm’s assessment of India.

Off-grid Power May Ease Deficit

India is expected to experience a 10% peak power shortage this fiscal year according to a report by the country’s Central Electricity Agency, equivalent to around 15 GW. The gap between energy supply and demand is partly responsible for the massive grid collapse and the world’s largest blackout in July.

The huge power deficit represents a significant opportunity for renewable sources to step in to meet this growing demand for energy, while also increasing the country’s energy security by reducing dependence on coal imports. However, the country’s poor power infrastructure remains one of the largest threats to the ability of alternative energy to fulfil its potential.

India lacks the transmission and distribution infrastructure to fully integrate renewables and many projects are already struggling to get connected to the national grid. FIT disputes, grid frailties, and connection delays are among the problems, exacerbated by high transmission and distribution losses.

As such, the country will need to focus on overhauling its power infrastructure in the short to medium term if it is to restabilize its energy market and facilitate the connection of additional capacity required to meet the continuously increasing demand for energy in this growing economy. This shift in focus for policy-makers and the energy sector as a whole may mean that renewable energy investment will have to wait its turn.

However, it has also become clear that renewable plants operating through local community grid systems were broadly unaffected by July’s blackout. More than a third of India’s population have no connection to the central grid, but there are now suggestions that a rapid expansion of distributed generation installations (i.e., off-grid) may be a way to meet increasing demand and ease grid pressures. To date, the Government has given little attention to distributed generation from renewable sources, however, this may be a potential avenue as it re-examines its power infrastructure, although the scale of off-grid projects is inevitably more limited.

Trading on India’s renewable energy certificate (REC) market continues to fare well, however, there are some concerns that it may not be trading optimally. Demand for RECs had been relatively low in recent months due to a supply glut and a concern that regulators may not be able to enforce the renewables targets properly. Cash-strapped state-run distribution companies, the main intended buyers, are failing to meet the targets and appear to be relying on government leniency. While REC trading levels are expected to remain relatively robust, failure to enforce noncompliance could undermine the credibility of the mechanism in the long run.

National Support for Wind is Critical

India’s wind sector has been relatively subdued over the past six months since the expiry of two key government incentives. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has recommended that the Government reinstate the “accelerated depreciation” tax benefit and “generation-based incentive” subsidy, on terms that are potentially even better than those that were in place until March 2012. However, there remains no certainty on whether the measures will be restored, and while 18 of the 25 State Electricity Regulatory Commissions offer FITs, the lack of coherent policy at a national level could continue to hinder future growth of the sector as a whole.

The number of turbine suppliers in India last year almost doubled from two years earlier as a result of surging installations. However, these suppliers may now be forced to consolidate amid increasing competition given the 39% plunge in installations in the first half of the financial year.

However, not all activity has ceased; listed company, Mytrah Energy has announced plans to invest INR300b (€4.32b) to install 5 GW of wind power capacity in India by 2018, and the company has already signed wind turbine supply deals with Suzlon and Gamesa worth US$2b (€1.54b).

Solar Packages Continue to be Rolled Out

Q3 saw the state of Andhra Pradesh introduce its first solar energy policy, offering projects completed by June 2014 benefits such as refunds on site registration charges and VAT on equipment. It will also waive transmission fees for using state-owned infrastructure and speed up the approvals process. The rollout of such a comprehensive solar package at a state level is extremely encouraging, although the solar resources here are not as high as in other states.

The Bank of India plans to offer loans to homes and businesses for solar power systems as part of the post-blackout energy reforms. The state-owned bank signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Gautam Polymer’s Solar unit to finance lanterns and rooftop panels.

Q3 saw Areva Solar recently commence construction of Asia’s largest CSP installation in Rajasthan, a 250MW project on behalf of Indian power company Reliance Power. Meanwhile, First Solar, the world’s biggest maker of thin-film panels, is looking to shift its focus toward project development, in particular plants for industrial and commercial consumers.

Týn in Czech Kostel Matky Boží před Týnem often translated as Church of Our Lady before Týn, is a dominant feature of the Old Town of Prague, Czech Republic, and has been the main church of this part of the city since the 14th century. The church's towers are 80 m high and topped by four small spires.
I

n the 11th century, this area was occupied by a Romanesque church, which was built there for foreign merchants coming to the near Týn Courtyard Later it was replaced by an early Gothic Church of Our Lady in front of Týn in 1256. Construction of the present church began in the 14th century in the late Gothic style under the influence of Matthias of Arras and later Peter Parler. By the beginning of the 15th century, construction was almost complete; only the towers, the gable and roof were missing. The church was controlled by Hussites for some time, including John of Rokycan, future archbishop of Prague, who became the church's vicar in 1427.

The roof was completed in the 1450s, while the gable and northern tower were completed shortly thereafter during the reign of George of Podebrady. His sculpture was placed on the gable, below a huge golden chalice, the symbol of the Hussites. The southern tower was not completed until 1511, under Matěj Rejsek. In 1626, after the Battle of White Mountain, the sculptures of George of Podebrady and the chalice were removed and replaced by a sculpture of the Virgin Mary, with a giant halo made from by melting down the chalice. In 1679 the church was struck by lightning, and the subsequent fire heavily damaged the old vault, which was later replaced by a lower baroque vault.

Renovation works carried out in 1876-1895 were later reversed during extensive exterior renovation works in the years 1973-1995. Interior renovation is still in progress.

Gold Standard To Return Worldwide

It's Official: Gold Standard To Return Worldwide January 1, 2013 Sending Gold Prices To $10,000+ by Carol A. Parker

On January 1, 2013, the world will go back to a gold standard. This isn't uncertainty. Banks in major economies across the world have actually currently adopted the rules. In anticipation, central banks have actually been getting gold in big volumes. Turkey added 3.9 million ounces in the last year. Mexico has bought 3.2 million ounces. Russia's reserves stand at 29.2 million ounces - the highest in 20 years. As they prepare for gold to become currency as soon as again, the cost of the yellow metal will certainly continue to go up. Experts are forecasting gold to rise to between $ 10,000 and $ 14,000 per ounce. Make sure you're prepared for the biggest economic change - and profit windfall - of your life. A quiet conspiracy should make gold a new currency on January 1st 2013. Central banks and governments are getting gold by the measurement bunch. If you hold any dollars, right here's exactly what you need to do now to prepare - and make a 670 % windfall as gold soars to historical highs.
4 times a year, a secret cabal of powerful well-dressed men quietly streams into a small metro on the border of Switzerland and Germany. Carrying over night bags and attaches, they discreetly check in at a round high-security tower in this sleepy European city. They're the world's only elite ring of monetary rule-makers who come from spots as disparate as Tokyo, London, and Washington, D.C., for the irregular meeting of the most special, secretive, and effective supranational club worldwide.
This secret syndicate seldom pops upon the "grid" - when every years or so. Yet their sole purpose is to coordinate and, if feasible, control all financial tasks in the industrialized globe by producing financial rules and regulations that quietly change our monetary landscape.
So secretive and eerie, the names of its members are not published anywhere. However you could wager the USA has a representative designated by the Fed. So does China, England, and additional prominent countries. This effective group has actually long been considered the most charming and exclusive money clubs worldwide, according to Time Magazine. The Economist calls them "the club of bank supervisors." However the New York Instances said it best when it designated them as "the secretive panel that sets up global banking criteria." Now they have actually fulfilled and hatched out a brand-new set of economic rules. One brand-new rule, in specific, will set off the most profound modification to your finances in 42 years.
So historic, this brand-new economic guideline demands gold be brought back into our economic system as cash.
A gigantic, inescapable gold-buying operation is already under method as central banks and governments prepare for this secret return to the gold standard. Because even though this is the most substantial updates for banks - and gold costs - in over 40 years, just the most connected insiders are positioning themselves for the remarkable modifications that are coming.
I solidly believe this is the greatest story of my career. It's also the very best possibility you will previously have to strike it rich. This isn't guesswork. The new "gold standard" guideline is in place. Gold prices are currently moving greater. Gold will easily soar beyond $ 2,000, also $ 3,000 an ounce... and it has the possible to hand you a simple 670 % revenue on a golden platter.
And all of this is because of this secret cabal's machinations that will set off a series of occasions starting January 1, 2013. And most notably, exactly how it will increase your net worth over the next 12 months. No one else will tell you about this lucrative opportunity, and there's absolutely nothing anybody can do to stop the imminent six-fold gold revenues you're about to see by early next year.
In short, everybody knows gold is a safe investment - however few Americans understand it will come to be even safer and more essential than paper currency in the next 3 months. It's Representative: Gold is Money! While this secret gold standard story is hardly making information, it stands to be the most considerable and lucrative gold story in our lifetime. John Butler, Managing Director at Deutsche Bank in London, agrees: "In what might be the most underreported financial tale of the year... should be a crucial step in the re-monetization of gold and this should be strongly supportive of the gold cost. Stay tuned."
Thing is, few Americans even realize there's this powerful key club that quietly cooks up monetary guidelines, like the one that brings gold back in our money system. But on June 18, the Federal Reserve (and the Workplace of the Comptroller of the Currency) through its website already released firm warnings to all banks to execute the new rules that make gold a legal currency.
This powerful banking cartel is merely known in deep financial circles as the "Basel Committee on Banking," due to the fact that their closed-door conferences are held not in Washington, or London, or Beijing, or some prominent city. However in Basel, a little peaceful city in Switzerland near the German border. As the highest authority in business banking supervision, it's the task force's part to determine capital demands and financial requirements with a set of guidelines stuck to by all banks on the world. Yet, through their peaceful presence, this business banking cabal has just provided 3 sets of banking guidelines that become the "banking mantra."
It's the 3rd and most recent set of guidelines that puts gold back in our cash system. And according to reporters, this historic ruling will certainly work January 1, 2013 - practically three months from now.
Gold: The Last Possession Standing! Bottom line: Government bonds and mortgage-backed safeties - the darlings for the last 40 years of financial safety - are toxic! And it's all due to the fact that bonds are tied to fiat currency and "bad personal debt." Just consider this: The value of German bonds, considered as a shelter from Europe's debt storm throughout the last 2 years, has begun to tank, according to the New York Times. "It's difficult to see why a banker would want to tie up cash in sovereign bonds," includes Phillip L. Swagel at the University of Maryland's School of Public Policy.
To fix this issue, the high-level Basel business banking cartel covertly fulfilled just recently and issued a 3rd and new set of rules that historically brings gold back in our money system as the new backdrop of banking protection. Gold should effortlessly double in value since of this brand-new rule. How High Will Silver Go? Learn More >> Silver Prices
In the next 3 months, things should change entirely and gold will certainly be re-rated a First-Class Possession, thanks to the influence and economic power of this banking mafia ring. For the very first time, banks will be allowed to hold bullion in their vaults and price it among their First-Class Assets. In other words, gold should be simply as great as money.
Banks are already preparing for the complete implementation of gold's dominance as the brand-new excellent protection for business banking, information firms gently reported. This suggests from now on, PHYSICAL gold should carry its full weight alongside cash in the worldwide financial system. It will certainly be considered "cash" in essentially the very same way as cash or government bonds, or also better.
And according to the Federal Reserve, all U.S. banks should adhere to this new business-banking rule.
It's very simple to see that gold will get a whole lot more important. You see, under the new guidelines, a bank's First-Class Asset have to rise from 4 % to 6 % of its total possessions, which means banks should have to replace a big piece of their existing paper currency with gold. This move will certainly push gold costs even higher and produce staggering profits for early capitalists. LOOKING FOR GOLD COINS, SILVER COINS, RARE COINS? Learn More >> GOLD COINS

Las VEGAS train from San Diego coming

Train from SoCal to Las Vegas coming soon: Company promises 'nightclub on rails' experience
Train expected to debut New Year's Eve 2013
SAN DIEGO - A Southern California-to-Las Vegas party train is being called "a nightclub on rails," and the company behind the train hopes San Diegans will decide to get on board instead of drive or fly next time they travel to Sin City.

Every weekend, thousands of San Diegans drive to a glittering jewel in the Nevada desert, but before they can get to the bright lights of Las Vegas, drivers like San Diegan Ron Rodriguez are often caught in traffic on Interstate 15.

"You're bumper-to-bumper, and it's crazy and miserable and you just want to get home," said Rodriquez.

The Las Vegas Railway Express said its X Train is the best alternative to driving or flying to Las Vegas.

"The X Train is the ultimate party train," said X Train Chief Operating Officer Peggy Stegeman. "We're basically a night club on rails."

A $99 ticket each way will get you from Southern California to Las Vegas in five and a half hours. The trip will include all-you-can-eat food.

"You start your party as soon as you get on board," said Stegman. "In fact, all of our servers are entertainers."

There will be two "ultra lounges" on board. Stegeman said they're similar to lounges in Las Vegas with bottle service. In addition, each of the 12 passenger cars compartments will have a bar.

The train doesn't come to San Diego, so anyone interested will have to take a train or drive to Fullerton, where the X Train originates.

That doesn't discourage some San Diegans who have been caught in I-15 traffic on their way to Las Vegas before.

"I feel like driving to Fullerton is way easier than driving all the way to Las Vegas," said Rebecca Filiciotto.

With train tracks from Union Pacific secured, train cars are being remodeled right now.

The first trip is planned for New Year's Eve 2013.

Sarchi COSTA RICA

World’s Largest Oxcart

A lot of times, a countries most important arts, crafts, and traditions end up as just another tourist trap, especially in a place with as many tourists as Costa Rica. Eventually, as travelers aim to avoid anything overly touristy, these traditions and crafts get labeled as nothing more than a tourist trap and overlooked by everyone but the package, tour bus tourist.

The Oxcart Factory in Sarchi

Located in Sarchi, the Fabrica de Carretas Eloy Alfaro is an old oxcart factory with yep, a giant gift shop. The gift shop is actually pretty interesting and filled with local crafts and art pieces. There is a lot of wood carvings and eco-friendly produces as well as the typical Pura Vida bumper stickers. Nearby is the “World’s Largest Oxcart” which is painted up beautifully and does make for a nice picture.

Behind the gift shop though, is where things start to get a bit more interesting. The actual “factory” is here and they both carve the oxcarts as well as paint them. Some of the machinery in the shop dated back to the 1920s and they aim to keep the manufacturing process as traditional as possible.
Oxcart History
Old Painted Oxcarts

The oxcart was originally used to transport grains and coffee from the central valley to the coast where they would be packaged up and shipped to other countries. It was a utilitarian item that was built to survive the 10-15 day trip without getting stuck in the thick mud on the roads. While it was built for work, it was also a sign of a families prosperity and social status.

In the beginning, the oxcarts were not painted. However, starting in the early 20th century, families began to paint their oxcarts and wheels to identify where they came from and to once again, show off their social status. Each region of Costa Rica had a particular painting style and the motifs on the carts almost served as a license plate, allowing them to be easily identified.
Oxcart Painter’s Studio

Eventually, as cars and trucks replaced the oxcarts, they became more elaborate and more for show. The wheels of the cart were designed with a unique song, which would play as the the cart bumped along and a metal ring struck the hub nut of the wheel. Today, the oxcarts are mainly just used in holiday or celebration settings.

At the Sarchi Oxcart Factory, you can see the carts being made, painted, and used. The artisans here are a dying breed – it’s hard to convince the younger generation to study an art form that is disappearing as oxcarts become ever more useless in the modern day. The artists love to show off their craft though and if you have time, you can even sign up for a art class with one of the factory artists.

MEXICO wave FARMS

Wave Power to Prove Its Mettle with 30 Megawatts to be Built Off Mexico's Coast

Alt-Energy Cousin Wave power is the oft-forgotten cousin of solar and wind power. It has huge potential, but it is not quite as far along as the better known sources of clean power, so it tends to be overlooked. But it shouldn't! To clean up our power grid we'll need all the help we can get. Granted, in many places where wave power would work, offshore wind power would also work, but that might not be the case everywhere (ie. very deep water), and if wave power's cost can be brought down enough, that might not even matter.

There might not be much wave power deployed so far, but you have to start somewhere! Maremotrices de Energias Renovables, also known as Marersa, plans to start building wave power farms with a capacity of 30 megawatts.

Marersa, based in Mexico City, will install about 450 floating buoys that harness the movement of waves to create hydraulic pressure which is converted into electricity, Markivich said. It has pledged to sell the energy at 20 percent lower prices than electricity bought from state power utility Comision Federal de Electricidad.

“We have the cheapest renewable energy in Mexico,” Diego Carrion, sales and business manager for Marersa, said in a telephone interview. “Wind farms may be able to offer between a 10 and 12 percent discount” on grid electricity.

The first project should be built in February 2013 off the coast of Baja California state, Mexico.

Hopefully this helps show that wave power is a real contender! And even if it turns out that these projects show that wave power is not competitive, not reliable, or whatever, well, that's also good to know so we can concentrate our resources on what works better. Either way, I'm curious to see how this will turn out.

Above is a photo of a buoy by Ocean Power Technologies. I'm not sure what Marersa's buoys will look like, but chances are they'll be similar, unless they go with the snake/caterpillar design.

Machu Picchu the Salkantay Trek

Machu Picchu

Salkantay Hike to Machu Picchu

Everyone arrives in Cusco to hike the famous Inca Trail. We heard upon arrival that if you want to see ruins than you should hike the Inca Trail, but if you want to see unbelievable mind-blowing scenery the Salkantay Trek is the way to go.

The Salkantay Trek takes you through the Salkantay Pass reaching 4,600m (15,200 ft) at its highest point. You will start the trek hiking through glaciers and finish the hike down in the jungle. It is usually a 5 day/4 night trek and you can book it through numerous tour agencies once you arrive in Cusco.

The prices range from $180 pp – $700 pp. You get what you pay for so be careful to ensure you have good equipment provided and will have a cook to keep you fed throughout the hike.
 Machu Picchu, Salkantay Trek
Day 1 – Mollepata to Soraypampa

You begin the hike in Mollepata, about a 3 hour trip by car from Cusco. The first day is rather easy but it allows you to get used to hiking in a higher altitude. Also, an hour into the hike you get your first glimpse a snow capped mountain! If you are struggling on day 1 make sure to tell your guide because it will only get tougher from here. Most treks will have a horse available for people who are having difficulty.
 Machu Picchu, Salkantay Trek
Day 2 – Salkantay Pass to Chaullay

Today you start the morning with the big hike up, so make sure to eat extra breakfast in the morning. This is the steepest part of the hike as you reach 15,200 feet within 3+ hours. Keep your own pace going up, if you feel any symptoms of altitude sickness, slow down and tell your guide.
Machu Picchu, Salkantay Trek

The glaciers at the peak are incredible. The scenery along this hike is some of the best I have ever encountered. The pass at 15,200 feet is very cold. Make sure to dress in layers because by the end of the day you’ll be in a much warmer area, but also bring a hat, gloves and proper jacket for the pass.

Day 3 – Sahuayaco and Santa Theresa

Today’s morning hike is shorter than yesterday’s 9 hour hike, but it is still tough depending on the weather. You walk through the upper jungle area through streams, past waterfalls and across beautiful valleys. We were there during the beginning of the wet season (November) and we ran into some pretty muddy parts.

The second part of the day you have the option to visit the hot springs in Santa Theresa. We arrived early and had the pools all to ourselves. After three days of hiking the warm water felt fabulous on our muscles. Hopefully you’ve taken care of yourself with your bug spray so far, because at the hot springs you’ll see how bad others have been bitten!

Day 4 – Aguas Calientes

Today plan on hiking for around 6 hours to Aguas Calientes, the launching city to visit Machu Picchu. The hike is much flatter today with the first 3 hours being mainly on the road and the second half of the day being along the train tracks. You get your first sighting of Machu Picchu as you circle the mountain following the train tracks. You also have the option of taking a bus all the way in, but you’ve come this far already, why not finish it?

While the previous nights have been spent sleeping on the floor of a tent, tonight will most likely be spent in a hotel/hostel in Aguas Calientes, the comfort of which is likely dependent on how much you paid for your tour. We were overjoyed to finally get a proper hot shower and sit and eat in a restaurant without being eaten by mosquitoes outside.

Day 5 – Machu Picchu

Finally you’ve arrived and get to visit Machu Picchu today! You will be given the option to either climb “1 hour of stairs” or take the bus up to Machu Picchu. Our group decided we had walked this far, we might as well finish the hike up. It was TOUGH. We woke up at 4 am and started our hike up the mountain of stairs at 5 am from Aguas Caliente. These stairs are no joke, our hearts were pounding and sweat was definitely dripping. Not to mention that the first bus will likely beat you to the top and you may or may not resent those people who decided pay for the ride.

Looking back, it might have been nice to save our legs for walking around Machu Picchu and climbing Wayna Picchu because our legs were tired after the morning hour hike. Your tour guide will take you on a tour of the ruins and then will give you time to explore yourself, including climbing Wayna Picchu (not an easy task), visiting the sun gate, the Inca ridge or just getting more photos of the Machu Picchu ruins.

After getting your fill of Machu Picchu, take the bus back to Aguas Calientes and enjoy a big lunch and a cold cerveza. You’ve earned it!

Couples Travel Tips:
Bring mosquito repellent – Even with repellent you will probably still get bit by the sand flies. The bites look like bee stings and itch like crazy!
Wear loose fitting pants – The pants will help you avoid getting bit by the flies. We saw other groups who wore shorts and their legs were covered in painful bites.
Save a clean outfit for the day you visit Machu Picchu – Your clothes will smell bad after 5 days of trekking and not showering. On your last day in Aguas Calientes when you take a hot shower you will feel refreshed putting on a clean outfit. Also if you decide to hike up the stairs from Aguas Calientes, bring an extra t-shirt in your bag to Machu Picchu as you’ll be sweating by the time you reach it.
