Northwest Florida fish report

The gag grouper bite continues to shine in between the cold fronts and it’s finally trolling time. With the limited short fishing window we have this year, we’re loosing many days to the windy conditions, but when I’ve been able to make it out the grouper fishing has been outstanding. I’ve had great success trolling Rapala CD 14’s and x-rap 20’s in various colors in the 12ft to 25ft depth range. The water clarity to the North of Crystal River has been extremely dirty. So for a sure bet, the waters South off Homosassa have been the best area to troll up some gags. With only a couple days left, let’s hope for good weather and finish out this short season with a bang.
Back inshore, our snook population have invaded the spring fed rivers and are readily taking plugs. Small baitfish imitation lures such as the Yo-Zuri 3D minnow and MirrOlure Mirrodines are working very well. Target the rocky points, docks and areas around the springs, for a Citrus County snook. The trout are filling up just outside the backcountry creeks and rivers in preparation for the winter. Locate the yellow bottom areas with kelp grass and use soft plastic jerk baits, MirrOlure Lil’ Johns or a jig and cork rig, such as the DOA deadly combo to keep the rods bent. If the weather continues to stay mild, the fish will remain where they are. However, if a strong cold front arrives, look for the fish to push into the backcountry.
