The much anticipated redfish schools are starting to show little by little, and double digit days are now a real possibility. The out keys off Homosassa as well as the spoil islands off Crystal River are the prime locations. Cut baits such as lady fish, mullet and a (local favorite) lizard fish is hard to beat.
Locate the rocky points with good current flow and mullet activity to stake out and present your bait. If artificial lures is your game, now is the time to tie on a gold spoon and work the shore lines. The floating grass makes working top water plugs near impossible and a gold spoon can give you a great presentation that the other lures can’t do.
Some good trout reports are coming in lately from the shallower 3ft to 4ft depth range. Jig and cork rigs such as the DOA deadly combos rigged with a holographic root beer shrimp, has been the go to bait. Look for the spotty “yellow” hard bottom areas with kelp grass to set up your drift. The incoming tide is best and as this month progresses, more and more trout will be on the move inshore.
Gag grouper season opens in a couple weeks (September 16th), so you grouper diggers get ready for some outstanding action. Many of the offshore locations haven’t seen any pressure for close to 9 months, so there should be some hefty gags ready for a tug of war. It’s still a little to warm to troll, but anchoring up and sending down a live pin fish will get the job done. Good Fishing…
