As a part of the Cooperative Extension Office, Master Gardeners are well-trained volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, who serve the community in which they live. The program provides interested individuals with extensive training in many phases of gardening. In return, participants dedicate volunteer time to educate other gardeners in their community with reliable information. The Virginia Beach Master Gardener Program began in 1982 and the program currently has 258 active volunteers that contribute thousands of hours of service to the community each year.

What Do Master Gardeners Do?
- Teach school children about the environment and develop school gardening projects such as the Ready, Set, Grow program.
- Design and maintain demonstration gardens at the Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Virginia Beach.
- Plan and conduct educational workshops.
- Disseminate information on various aspects of gardening practices, such as composting and responsible use of pesticides, to the public at garden shows and other events.
- Maintain the Extension Master Gardener Help Desk, a hot line telephone service for gardening questions from the public
- Hold plant and lawn clinics.
