The Festival of Devils and Congos in Portobelo Panama

The Festival of Devils and Congos in Portobelo Panama
Portobelo is a town that has a long history in the Republic of Panama. For over three hundred years the Spanish used this town to export gold, silver and other goods back to Spain from Central America. Due to this many of the people here are descendants of slaves who brought with them their beautiful African cultures. To celebrate this culture the Province of Colon is once again celebrating the Festival of Devils and Congos in Portobelo, Panama.

If you have never been to Portobelo Panama this would be the time to go. Portobelo is now a sleepy little town on the Caribbean coast of Panama not far from Colon. The former Spanish port still shows its heritage. The town is flanked by two Spanish era forts that were used to protect it from pirates and other invaders. This was to no avail as Captain Morgan and his Buccaneers sacked Portobelo on July 11th of 1668. The forts are now a United Nations World Heritage site.

The picturesque town comes alive each year during the Festival of Devils and Congo’s. You will be able to witness “Diablito’s” and other colorful costumes. The dance troupes will be performing to the beats of the congos. The singers, musicians and dancers will be celebrating their African heritage. The dances and songs celebrate the victory of good over evil.
