“I can’t give out particulars because it’s proprietary,” Rothery said. “But it’s a lot of fish in close.”
Rothery said his boat leaves Friday for a three-day run, and he predicted that his anglers, judging by how close the fish are, should get two full days of fishing on the three-day trip.
Rothery said he has openings on an upcoming five-day trip that leaves July 23. And spots on another five-day that leaves July 28.
With the water heating up, there’s an autumn-like mix of fish being caught. The day fleet is getting into excellent numbers on yellowtail, with good fishing for bluefin, yellowfin and even dorado.
The Condor’s anglers had 50 fish early, a mix of bluefin, yellowtail and dorado, fishing in flat, calm seas on Thursday.
The First String reported its 21 anglers boated 51 yellowtail, 25 bluefin and 2 dorado on a two-day run.
Inshore fishing picked up this week, also, with big white seabass showing. Capt. Fred Huber of the Daily Double said the Everingham Brothers Bait Co., has been supplying anchovies once again, and that has helped the success rate for half-day anglers.
Bob Woodard, fishing on a private boat, landed a 67.8 white seabass during a coastal fishing trip off San Diego.
The fifth annual Crystal Pier Kid’s Classic Fishing Tournament is set for Saturday starting at 8 a.m. Hosted by Capt. Ron Baker, the free event for kids features a free lunch, bait and instruction from Baker’s crew.
Ed McGrew, the former owner of the Rio Bend RV Park and Golf Course off Drew Road in West El Centro, now is general manager of the Sunbeam Lake RV Park. McGrew once hosted a part on the eve of dove hunting and again the night before the pheasant opener in Imperial Valley. He’s bringing that back this year to see if hunters still want to enjoy a barbecue dinner the night before the opener. McGrew said he’s offering a free barbecue and discounted camper rates to kick off the season. He’ll also have coffee and donuts early in the morning for hunters. The 14th annual El Cajon Ford San Diego Open Team Tournament is set for Aug. 13-14, with anglers getting to fish Lower Otay and El Capitan. The teams switch lakes after the first day. Top prize is $5,000, and there’s a $1,000 prize for the heaviest bass and another $1,000 prize for the heaviest stringer.
